Puzzle Piece Take Aways

It’s never too early to start discussing number concepts. Today as we were playing with a puzzle, the bigger of the boys (3 years) mentioned that the puzzle had 9 pieces. The little one put one piece back in the puzzle and I jumped right in, “we had 9 pieces out of the puzzle and we put one back; how many are still out?” After counting, the boys decided there were 8 left. We continued our little game and as we did the boys started mixing it up a bit and putting more than one piece in at a time.

We recorded our problems but no not they could memorize them but rather so subtraction will look familiar in the future.

What in the moment math do you do with your toddler or preschooler?
