Teaching empathy is a difficult task for any parent, especially parents who’s children are still toddlers. One way that we try to help our children understand that other people also have needs is to participate in canned food drives. Some years this means volunteering to pack boxes or baskets of food to be delivered to needy families and other years this means taking a special trip the grocery store to buy items to put into a food drive box. Our toddler has participated in both types of drives successfully; however, doing the shopping seems to have a larger impact in the empathy department. Whatever you choose to do, take a moment and think about how blessed you are and how something as simple as a box of mac ‘n cheese or a can of carrots can brighten the day of another family.
